Paddle Up – Kayaking and Paddle Boarding in Ogunquit

Looking to make a splash without getting soaked? Or to explore many of the area’s out-of-the-way waterfront views? Then there’s nothing quite like taking to the water in a kayak or on a standup paddle board (SUP) … whether you’re looking for a ride on the high seas or a calm excursion on the Tidal River. Just grab a paddle and you’ll be slicing through the water on your way to a day of challenging or relaxing fun.

The Ogunquit Tidal River, one of the area’s most popular kayaking spots, is just footsteps from your cottage or guest room. The Ogunquit River flows both to and from the ocean right past The Dunes. Once you get the hang of the river’s changing tide schedule, you can use it to your advantage in planning your Maine kayaking adventure. You’ll have almost 10 miles of waterway to travel on, with the rare ability to paddle with the current both ways. Other great kayaking locations  include the spectacular environs of The Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, Kennebunkport’s Tidal River, Cape Porpoise and Biddeford Pool. Looking for something a bit different? Then stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) might be just for you. Depending on the kind of paddle boarding you want to do, you’ll find lots of places to explore. Adventurous and more experienced boarders can try their hand at the challenging Maine coast, while boarders looking for a more relaxing outing might try the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge – a perfect place to see some of the local seabirds and coastal animals. And of course, there’s our own nearby Ogunquit Tidal River.

At The Dunes, we’ve also partnered with Liquid Dreams Surf Shop to offer SUP lessons right from our dock from June to August. You’ll meet an instructor — and be provided with your board, paddle and wetsuit (not required). The classes launch an hour before high tide. Students are taught the fundamentals of SUP, including how to stand, ocean safety, and most importantly, how to have fun!  SUP lessons at the Dunes start at $80 per person; to sign up, chat with one of the staff at our Front Desk.  207-646-2612.

Finally, where do you rent a kayak? Right at our Front Desk.
